Our lessons are made up of the following aspects (depending on the needs of your child, based upon their initial and follow-up assessments).

  • Whole text reading (Reading a book)

  • Phonological and phonemic awareness skills (if required)

  • Letter and letter combination- sound correspondence - learning the rules that govern the English language for reading and spelling

  • Spelling

  • Handwriting

  • Writing

  • Listening to a preferred book if there is time - otherwise, recommended to do this during the week with your child. If you need help finding a book that your child enjoys listening to, please feel free to drop into Gleebooks, Glebe for advice from the kids specialists there. the kids team are highly skilled at recommending the right books.

The activities are designed to be quick and enjoyable. A few minutes of practice done repeatedly over time will build the skills and help maintain engagement in the lesson. We may take a few minutes in between activities to reset our attention by playing with a fidget toy or stretching out.

We will arrive with all materials required for the lesson, including hands-on activities and readers to keep for the week for reading practice. We recommend practising as much as you can during the week. We do understand that family life gets busy though.

If you would like to chat with us about anything, please feel free to call, message or speak at the end of the lesson for a few minutes before we need to head off to another student. We value any feedback to make the experience better for everyone.

What you can expect to see.

At the end of a term of tutoring, your child should have improved across a range of skills. Their ability to decode words, read texts, spell and write should have all improved. In one or two terms of tutoring, your child should be seeing a marked improvement in all of the skills mentioned above. We end the term with a re-assessment of the skills to see exactly how things have improved and where we would focus on the next term. This comes with a report as well.

Ways to see greater improvement.

Tutoring sessions twice per week will see improvements more quickly and of greater significance. I aim to work with students for a brief period, rather than for an extended period, so if you wanted to do a term of twice per week, that may be a good idea to really get things moving in the right direction.

Otherwise, practising reading using readers that we leave for you, learning sight words and/or developing fine motor skills are ways that you can see greater improvement.

Listening to audiobooks at night or in the car can be an amazing tool to ignite a love for stories as well as developing many of the skills required for reading and writing without the pressure of having to read themselves.
